Rome an Florence was our first weekend trip and they were absolutely amazing!! Our first stops in Rome were the enchanting Colosseum, The Arch of Constantine, and three churches including St.Peter’s and San Giovani! Alot of churches (including the second one we visited) have underground churches as well. This particular one had caves you could walk through and graves. San Giovani had huge statues lining the walls and lots of gold and blue colors decorating its interior. That night we went to the Spanish steps, Sinking boat statue, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain!! All of these places were magnificent and so much fun to see!!
The next morning we woke up early and traveled to the Vatican!! The museum was magnificent and very impressive. Their Egyptian exhibit included a partially unwrapped mummy and all of their other exhibits were gorgeous as well! The ceilings were covered in paintings and there was a whole hallway of beautiful statues and artifacts like an ancient bath tub and huge caskets for roman emperors and their families. Finally we made it to the Sistine Chapel and it was smaller then expected, but still absolutely beautiful! Even the guards shhing couldn’t stop me from being so impressed by this room partially decorated by Michelangelo. Then we walked over to St. Peter’s Basilica!
That afternoon we headed out to Florence on a high speed train! We traveled first to the Academia Museum to see Michelangelo’s Statue of David! I was absolutely astonished by the perfection of this 20 foot marble statue! I imagined to work that must have gone into carving a statue that huge and doing it so precisely. This was probably the most amazing thing I saw in Florence. Then we walked to the Duomo and climbed to the top.The roof of the Duomo is painted like Heaven and Hell and is totally frightening. 400 something steps later through tight rounding stone staircases we FINALLY reached the top and the view was so worth it!! We went L’Antico Noe for awesome sandwiches and then went out in Piazza Santa Croce that night!!
Overall it was an amazing weekend and adventuring outside of Italy in the coming weekends will be just as much fun!!
